Ernestine Rose grew up on the west side of Chicago during the turbulent 50’s and 60’s. Adopted by an older couple, she spent a great deal of time as a child reading and participating in dance and drama club activities in school. Bradley University and the University of Dallas prepared her for a successful career as a teacher of English, speech and theater in Peoria and Fort Worth, where she earned numerous educator awards while raising four sons.
As a retired public school teacher, she made her debut as a writer with the publication of three books: 7 Tips for A Successful Marriage, Raising the Roses, and Tales from the Family Tree. A year later, she published her first novel, Monday Morning Blues, a “grown folks love story”. When her husband became ill, she started journaling, and after his death, she turned those journals into Seasons: My Journey through Grief.
She relocated to Houston to join her sons and grandchildren, and continues to write, blog, and do editing and consulting for other authors. Inspired by Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, her focus in both writing and theater is on the power of language, love, and family. Life, like grief, has its own set of seasons. We must all eventually face them head on, in our own time and at our own pace. No matter what our loss, we must learn how to endure and survive our seasons in order to live fully again.
I lost my husband of forty-one years to sarcoidosis. I found my comfort in writing, a skill he had encouraged me to develop after I retired from teaching.
After two years, I turned the 800 pages I had journaled into my fifth book, Seasons. I selected my best passages and organized them into four sections: summer, winter, autumn, and spring, recounting his illness, his death, and the year that followed.
This is the true story of my journey through my own seasons of grief. If you’ve lost a loved one, especially a spouse, you might gain some insight from my journey.
