Alfred the Monarch Butterfly is a story about the experiences of families from different cultures and languages as told through the adventures of the southern monarch butterflies as they migrate to northern Mexico. The story is embedded with family, love, friendship, death, and diversity. As the butterflies interact, they discover that there is more sameness than differences in their experiences.

“Educator and Author Jerlene Crawford Hales Takes Readers into the Colorful Life Cycles of Butterfly to Teach Children About Love and Respect

In a heart-tugging book that follows the journey of Alfred, a southern California Monarch butterfly, children are introduced to diversity, unity, familial love, and the amazing transformation of butterflies—from a caterpillar to majestic creatures. Jerlene Crawford Hales presents the book “Alfred the Monarch Butterfly.”

The story begins when Alfred was just a hairy caterpillar. Because of his looks, he was bullied by Buster, the bumblebee. However, the day for his metamorphosis comes, and Alfred is not aware of the changes that are happening to him. After encasing himself in a chrysalis and sleeping for ten days, Alfred metamorphosizes into a majestic butterfly. And this is where his adventures begin.

Come with him as he flies through the shrubby and flowery gardens of Southern California. Children will also be introduced to different characteristics of Monarch butterflies, like their lifespan, ability to fly long distances during migration, and the time of the year they do it. But, one of the best-selling points of the book is it enforces diversity, love, respect, and coexistence.

The book also comes with full-page illustrations in vibrant colors that help capture and retain the attention of children. It is interactive and rich in new learning that children will find interesting. Jerlene’s simplistic writing style makes the book an excellent practice tool for children who are in the early stages of learning how to read.

The story of Alfred has a surprising end, but it is what sets the book apart from other children’s books. Discover where his journey takes him. Get your copy.”
