Born in Germany, Hannah S. Hess came to the United States via Ecuador. She was educated in New York City public schools, and worked there as a high school English teacher, assistant principal, and principal. The mother of three children, she lives with her husband, Walter, a published poet and film-maker. She is the author of The Third Side of the Desk; How Parents Can Change the School, and a novel, Honest Deceptions.

A coming of age novel, We Perish Each Alone explores the meaning of friendship, families, and relationships. Jeanne has just graduated from high school and has taken a summer job as a mother’s helper to the owner of a Catskill family hotel. Her job makes her an observer as well as a player, and the 8-year-old brother of her two charges, a broodingly-angry young man, promptly latches himself to Jeanne. She watches all summer as the antics of the guests and the insensitivity of her boss create awful consequences.

“Author Hannah S. Hess Examines Human Relationships in Her Novel “We Perish Each Alone”

Hannah Hess will delight readers with a dazzling yet sympathetic coming-of-age story that blends elements of a thrilling thriller with an examination of human relationships. “We Perish Each Alone,” a book by Hess, will take us back to the days of our youth.

The story takes place in the summer of 1951. Jeannie, who is seventeen years old, just finished her senior year in high school. She ended up working as a mother’s assistant at such an upstate vacation resort while looking for summer employment. However, as she navigates her summer days, she is immersed in a lifetime of powerful events, and she grows into a remarkable young girl. That summer, we accompany her as she meets young men, examines the gap between sex and love, and encounters violent prejudice. However, it is her worry for Marty, the resort owner’s beaten and disturbed young son, that will take us on an emotional trip.

Will this sympathy, on the other hand, be of help to this disturbed child?

Join Hess as she displays her uncanny understanding of human nature. She transports readers back to their adolescent years by depicting real, conflicted feelings. Hess wrote “We Perish Each Alone” in a gentle, lyrical way, with well-developed characters and evocative descriptions that transport us to the Catskill Mountains’ shifting seasons. Furthermore, she developed an excellent narrative and combined it with a dramatic twist, making it a must-read novel.
