Mr. Self has a B.S. in Engineering Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.B.A. from Northeastern University. He has worked in a wide variety of businesses which included chemical mfg., defense, electronics, R & D, computer software, insurance, and retail inventory management. All of these jobs involved information analysis and problem solving and included extensive programing experience.
This book is unique; nothing like it has ever been published before.
Mr. Self’s thesis is that reality should be not thought of as a single entity; he believes that reality consists of three independent, but interdependent entities – physical reality, subjective reality and social reality. In turn, these entities consists of four aspects – space, matter/energy, time and life and he discusses the nature of each of these aspects.
Although his book is based on scientific fact it is speculative in nature and discusses alternative views of a number of topics associated with reality. He raises questions such as “If our universe contained no life whatsoever, what would be the nature of reality?”, “How long is ‘now’?” , “Does matter exist in more phases than the three with which we are familiar?”, “Where did the energy that was the source of the ‘big bang’ come from?” and, “What is the relationship between life and entropy?”
The book contains views which are radical in nature. Among them are: “The past and the future only exist subjectively – without life they do not exist”. “Contrary to Einstein’s views, absolute time does exist.” “It is possible that the cosmos contains more than one Universe”. “Energy is a property of matter, it is not a separate aspect of reality”. “Life is counter-entropic”.
Readers of this book may not agree with many of Mr. Self’s conclusions, but they will certainly generate thought.
